I had three 5th students: Andy, Camila, and Cintya as my mentees. Three of them are bilingual students, they speak Spanish and English. At the first day, we did self-assessment test. The result showed that they all were visual learners. The second day, we read the book called “That’s why we don’t eat animals” by Ruby Roth. The story was about animals from the ocean, rain forest, pets, and farm. The author explained that animals also have feelings just like human. Animals in the ocean are ecosystem and they help the environment. Animals that were raised in a farm were abused by forced fed and kept in cages, those animals would never see outside the world. The author showed how animals were mistreated and pointed out reasons why we should not eat animals, they agreed that animals should not be mistreated and it was not fair to them. After we read, we came up with 5 vocabulary words: Nuzzle, Fierce, grudge, ecosystem and poultry.
I learned that while I was teaching, I was learning as well. That was my ha-ha moment! I am also a bilingual student, English is my second language. I did not know all vocabularies. And my expectation was to be able to explain and answer all questions that students may have. I don’t think that I met my expectation because I could not answer some questions that they asked, and that was the limitation of my vocabularies.
My plan is to prepare in what we are going to learn/teach for the next class. I would like my students to tell me what do they want to learn, and what do they expect from their mentor. I believe this will be a great experience of service learning for my summer RDG091.
